Set Up Private Web Hosting Server
Posted in How To, Web Hosting | By AhTim @ June 9th, 2009
My brother asked my help to set up private web hosting server with a domain name. He want to have full control on the server instead of rent a web space.
Every domain name need a DNS server of the Web Hosting. In this case, my brother do not have a fix ip line so have to use dynamic IP address.
Set Up Dynamic IP Hosting
To set up private hosting with dynamic IP, DynDNS service is the easiest way. After register a free account, you’ll need to buy 2 products/services: Domain Name (.com,.org,.net) and Custom DNS.
Its domain name more expensive than others, $15 USD for one. The Custom DNS is far expensive than domain name, $27.5 for a year. Anyway, we got $5 USD discount and pay off total of $37.5 USD. However, there are other hosting providers that offer free domain names as part of their package.
For long term, it is cheaper but make sure you have backup plan on Data, Internet Connection, and Server.
Set Up Router DDNS
Once done, you’re ready to set up DDNS on router. Most newer router should have DDNS feature build-in. Put in information accordingly: host (newly bought domain name),username, password, etc. Recommend to restart router and it should work within 10 minutes.
To test functionality, open a command prompt, enter command “ping yourdomain.com”. It is work if have reply.
Set Up Virtual Server
Virtual Server is the service that you want to open for public. Also available in most router.
The basic setting is open up port 80 (http port) and point to your local web server ip address with port 80. It might vary depends on your custom port.
My Two Cents
Yeah! You’re now hosting your private web server with unlimited bandwidth, storage, CPU and RAM at ONLY $37.5 USD a year. It is too cheap!
Of course, you have to backup, backup and backup. Make sure your Internet line, server, data are safe at all time. Unless you are confident or don’t go for this.

This is an interesting article for me, but I have to study the DDNS part though. Its very interesting but what about the kind of speedy internet connection we’d require to host websites? What about firewall setup?
