Easy Steps to Migrate Web Hosting Server

As I mentioned yesterday, I have purchased an upgraded web hosting plan. But the blog would not migrate to the new web hosting server by itself. ;) How good it is if the blog know how to migrate by itself.

To migrate your web hosting server is not an easy job. It consist a lot of effort and time. I would say migrate web hosting server is just like how you move your house. So, better plan properly before migrate!

How to Migrate Web Hosting Server?

Basically, there are few easy steps to migrate your web hosting server. It is quite similar to the fastest way to upgrade wordpress. A blog is consist of 3 basic elements: Domain name, Blog database and Blog Engine, in my case is using wordpress.

Firstly, I will suggest you to migrate you blog database and setup your blog engine. As for me, I use cPanel to manage my web hosting. I suggest you to use Fantastico to install wordpress in 3 clicks! Very fast.

After setup wordpress, import your wordpress database into new db. Use phpMyAdmin to export from old web hosting server, then import into new web hosting server. It might take few minutes to run the mysql command depends on your database size.

Once your database is up, fine tune your blog engine. Use FTP client to upload your blog theme, plugins, htaccess file, favicon, etc. Also, do not forget to edit the wp-config.php file to suit your new environment. Check out WordPress Codex if you not sure how to edit. Now, your base is ready and wait for the house address. :)

Lastly, you will need to migrate your domain name. Domain name is just like your house address. So, don’t ever point to wrong address. Login domain registrar, change your domain’s DNS name server to new DNS name server (for eg: ns1.abc.com). You’re done! Now, you just need to wait for the DNS pointer replicate to all DNS name server in the world. In other words, you have to wait all servers to know your new house address.

For Windows computer, you might want to clear your local DNS cache. So that it read the new ip address from DNS. If not, it still refer to the old one. Issue command without quote “ipconfig /flushdns” in command prompt.

My two cents

Move a house is not an interesting or nice job to do. So is web hosting migration :( Fortunately, I have broadband connection at home to make things easy! ;)
