WordPress Blogger might looking forward the what’s new?

What I can say about WordPress 3.0 is all about CUSTOMIZATION. These are the new features you should know:

  • Custom Menu System
  • Custom Post Type
  • WordPress and WordPress MU merge
  • Super Admin to administrate multiple sites
  • New default theme – Twenty Ten

Custom Post Type is one of the major upgrade. It allows better organizer for post at your own define type. For example, you could organize video post, podcast, photo post and traditional post in different type. Suitable for multi-type Blogger.

WordPress turn on VaultPress, a paid backup service for your blogs with a small fee. Multi-blogs Bloggers should consider it seriously. It is quite tedious to backup multiple blogs manually.

VaultPress is NOT just a database backup tool. It backup and maintains all your WordPress databases, files, settings, plugins, etc by WordPress experts.

Pay $15 USD a month for a peace of mind. Would you pay to cover all your blogs? It is not available for public yet. But you could apply for beta if interested.

Recently there are a few Bloggers want to guest blog here. Hope this is the right place for them to share articles with you all, and make here more lively.

The writing style might be slightly different but don’t worry. You will benefit from these experience writer too! I hope you do enjoy and give your feedback to me directly at here.

User Rights and Roles

In order to make live easier, I have created WordPress account for them in my blog. In fact this is the first time I created multiple user accounts here. The are several roles, each role has certain level of rights.

  1. Subscriber – Can read comments, news letter ONLY. Basically useless, unless for private post.
  2. Administrator – Full permission who has access to all the administration features.
  3. Editor – Can publish, edit, and delete any posts/pages, moderate comments, manage categories, manage tags, manage links and upload files/images.
  4. Author – Can edit, publish and delete their posts, as well as upload files/images
  5. Contributor – Can edit their posts but cannot publish them. It will need to be submitted to an administrator for review. No edit after published and can’t upload images.

So, think properly before assign a role to Guest Blogger. Simply give out full right (Administrator or Editor) to unknown people is dangerous, unless you are very trust on them.

In my case, I assign Contributor to Guest Blogger. All articles need my approval before publish to the world! Are you interested to Guest Blog here? Contact me and submit the topics you’re writing on. ;)

I have upgraded this blog to WordPress 2.9 few days ago. Not major upgrade from version 2.8, yet a version you should not miss. There are at least 5 great features should motivate you go for the upgrade.

  1. Trash – Now when you delete post, page or comment it will go to trash instead of permanent deletion. Therefore you could restore it back when it is needed (or accidentally deleted).
  2. Image Editor – You can now crop, edit, rotate, flip, and scale your images with built-in image editor easily. No external software needed mean you will stay in WordPress for longer. :)
  3. Batch Plugin Update – Upgrade plugin one by one is tedious. Now it allow you to upgrade multiple plugins at once. It also using the new compatibility data from the plugins directory to make sure the compatibility with your WordPress.
  4. Easier Video Embeds – Simply paste the video URL it convert to embed code automatically. Now support for YouTube, Daily Motion, Blip.tv, Flickr, Hulu, Viddler, Qik, Revision3, Scribd, Google Video, Photobucket and more.
  5. Database Optimization – Support trick to activate automatic WordPress optimization! Just Edit wp-config.php file and add in define(‘WP_ALLOW_REPAIR’, true);. I have activated it, how about you?

But I can’t wait anymore to upgrade WordPress to version 2.8.5. Not the version has great features, but to resolve some blog’s errors.

Let’s see what is new in WordPress 2.8.5 before go to fix my blog’s errors. Headline changes in the release are:

  • Fix for the Trackback Denial-Of-Service (DOS) attack
  • Fine tune PHP code variables
  • File upload functionality to be whitelisted for all users
  • Retiring of the two importers of Tag data

No big surprise. Just better security fixes. Then why I take the upgrade?

There are few errors in my blog recently, could be more than a month i think:

  • Once publish new post, it turn to blank instead of admin page.
  • Can’t build XML sitemap for search engines.

WordPress 2.8.5 Make Better Blog

The errors make me loss traffic from search engines. What I did was deactivated all plugins. Recheck wordpress theme php code don’t have space or line after php close.

After that upgrade to WordPress 2.8.5 with single click (my favourite feature in WordPress 2.8). And yes, I get my blog back to work as normal.

Only reactivate plugins that really need to make blog load faster. Rebuilt XML sitemap and now can publish post without error! ;)

Didn’t notice any different at that time until found a big big problem few days back.

The post visual editor totally disappeared! Even the content loss after save draft. I thought was due to slow internet connection or bad server performance.

On the next day when I check back, it is still the same. I know something is not right. Check other blogs and found no problem. So the only root cause I can think of is its WordPress version.

Tweak WordPress Config File

Search many help on Internet but useless. Except one is really working. What I did is just add the code below into wp-config.php, somewhere near the top or middle but not at bottom.

define( ‘CONCATENATE_SCRIPTS’, false )

It took few seconds to save. Reload the post edit page, now visual editor load perfectly. Are you having the same problem with WordPress 2.8? Act now to rectify the error. Hope WordPress fix the bug in next release soon. :)

Its already a year since my last upgrade to WordPress 2.6.

The total upgrade time is 27 minutes, including plugins reactivation. I use the 3 easiest steps to upgrade instead of normal way.

I set own rules to upgrade WordPress engine not more than twice a year. But this time really wait too long until its latest release.

What’s New in WordPress 2.8.2?

There are too much different since my WordPress 2.6. I don’t think you all want to know all upgrades and differences. Just highlight some features which useful for day to day blogging life.

Better Themes Management

Now can mange blog themes easily. A click away from activate, preview and delete. Want change new theme layout but hard to find? Add New Themes under Appearance helps to find specific theme on the spot with feature filter. Means you can find themes based on colors, columns and many more.

Widgets Admin Interface

All sidebars are visible at a glance. Widget become more intelligent. You can edit its properties once drop into a sidebar, without need to click Show.

Besides, widgets in Dashboard are drag-and-drop enable in admin interface.

Quick Edit Post Comments

My favourite features in this upgrade is quick reply comments. No need to reply in post anymore. You can reply, approve, delete comments faster. Save more time for blogging. Yeah! :)

My Two Cents

So far none of plugins craash with this latest WordPress engine. All just running fine after reactivate. Remember to backup, backup and backup your blog before upgrade.

Believe my blog load faster, more secure and easier to use now! Lots more features for discover by yourself.
