After read the Web Browser War poll result.

For 1 and half year I prefer Firefox as primary browser because start-up time faster than Chrome browser, and plenty of useful add-ons. But until yesterday I noticed Chrome browser has significant improvement on start-up time and extensions! Surprise me, out of my expectation. :)

Frankly, the browsing experience is speed in lighting even with extensions enabled. It is spacious and neat too.

Are you using the fastest web browser? If you use Firefox, its latest Firefox 3.5.6 run 2X faster than Firefox 3. The website loading speed bottle neck is on JavaScript process time. The faster it process JavaScript, the faster it finish load a website.

The graph above shows respond time for each browser under SunSpider JavaScript test drive. Chrome run fastest followed by Safari. Firefox 3.5 engine has been improved a lot that come near to Safari. :)

Although Chrome and Safari run faster, its start-up time slower than Firefox. I’ll stick to Firefox 3.5.6 for useful Plugins and fair loading speed! Which web browser are you?

Some user experience slow Firefox 3.5 startup after upgraded. Do you face the same problem?

Let me tell you why mine faster and your firefox 3.5 start slower. It is a bug in new Firefox. It try to gets randomness it needs for security purpose by scanning temporary folder.

Unfortunately, our clever Windows create lots of temporary files and folders by Internet Explorer. Perhaps also happen to those who use IE once in a while. The only workaround is clean Temporary Folders and Internet Temporary Folders.

Clean Temporary Folders

You have to delete all files and folders inside these directories:

C:\Documents and Settings\*user*\Local Settings\History
C:\Documents and Settings\*user*\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
C:\Documents And Settings\*user*\Local Settings\Temp
C:\Documents And Settings\*user*\Recent

For Internet Temporary folders, can remove using Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet Options

The Firefox 3.5 startup will improvement after housekeeping. Hope a fix to this bug come available in next update 3.5.1.

Update: Firefox 3.5.1Pre is out, but on stable version, yet.

Sometime it run slower than it should be. Did some searches and found I could double the Internet browsing speed by just few simple tweaks.

3 Steps to Double Internet Speed

I found that Firefox tends to eat a lot of RAM in exchange for quicker launching and handling of the browser.

2 our of 3 steps are to reduce Firefox RAM consumption. Let’s do it with extra careful or your Firefox might not work.

1. Reduce RAM for Firefox Cache feature

In Firefox address bar, try this,

1) Type “about:config” (no quotes) and hit ENTER in the Firefox browser address bar
2) Find “browser.sessionhistory.max_total_viewers”
3) Set it’s value to “0“ (Zero)

2. Increase Page Loading Speed

1) Type “about:config” into the address bar

2) Alter the entries as follows:
Set “network.http.pipelining” to “true”
Set “network.http.proxy.pipelining” to “true”
Set “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests” to 10.

3) Right-click anywhere and select New->Integer.

Add name “nglayout.initialpaint.delay” with value to “0“ (Zero)

Optional: Add new field below for even faster web browsing,

New String - “network.dns.disableIPv6”: set “false”
New Integer – “content.notify.backoffcount”: set “5” (Five)
New Integer - “ui.submenuDelay”: set “0” (Zero)

3. Reduce RAM Usage to 10mb when minimize Firefox

1) Type in about:config and then press Enter.
2) Right Click in the page and select New -> Boolean.
3) In the box that pops up enter “config.trim_on_minimize”. Press Enter.
4) Now select True and then press Enter.

Lastly, Restart your Firefox to experience fast Internet browsing.

Some people claim their Firefox at least twice as fast and it’s a pretty simple to do in 5 minutes. I didn’t really count the loading time but it is really FAST! compare to its original.

Google release a second beta of its toolbar software that copy Chrome browser interface for Firefox. In Chrome, when you open new tab, it show you “Most Visited” site with thumbnail for selection.

The new Google toolbar 5 (beta) make your Firefox do the same thing. Not only that, but also shows “Recent Bookmarks” and “Recent closed tabs” as screen shot below.

Eventually, this feature already available in Opera browser before Chrome. So it is not a new thing.

It seems useful for some people, says to be easier and faster access. But for me is not. Maybe because I don’t rely on mouse when surfing Internet.

Before today, fake download link for Google Chrome is spreading around Internet. This proof that the world is so exciting. We all can’t wait to download and try the latest web browser by the giant search engine leader.

When I know Google is going to release its web browser, it remind me when Mozilla release its first Firefox edition last few years. I believe Google Chrome will spark the web browser industry, or at least produce another competition. Do you think Google Chrome will beat Mozilla Firefox? No wonder Google have to drop its Adsense Referral (including lots of Mozilla products) last month!

Google Chrome Features

Google build Chrome from scratch. It says “Google Chrome is a browser that combines a minimal design with sophisticated technology to make the web faster, safer, and easier”. Google Chrome is available for download now (~474kb, beta for Vista/XP) for Free.

The 3 main features of Chrome is:

  • One box for everything – Type in the address bar and get suggestions for both search and web pages. It is useful to get the correct url when you forgot.
  • Thumbnails of your top sites – Access your favorite pages instantly with lightning speed from any new tab. Same with speed dial feature in Opera.
  • Shortcuts for your apps – Get desktop shortcuts to launch your favorite web applications.

My two cents

What I like about Google Chrome? The first impression is clean, neat and tidy! It make me view website in wider angle. For speed, it a little bit slower than Firefox to load my blog.

For application stability, it has better control. In Chrome, It “sandbox” each tab. This mean all tab run as different processes. The benefit is a tab crash won’t collapse whole Chrome.

Found an interesting new security feature called “Site Identity” to share with you. Browsing a normal Website, we might not have security concern. How about when you order goods online? Or application that need your personal or financial information? Make sure the party is trustable before send out these sensitive data.

How to know whether it is a trustable Website? Here the Site Identity feature comes in. This feature allows you to see whether the Web site has supplied information about their identity, who has verified that information, and whether they protect your information from eavesdroppers. This is just like you will make sure the person is trusted before hand over your money to him/her. Am I right?

Site Identity Levels

There are 4 types of Site Identity Levels. Each level provide different identity information. The higher level give better security. The site identity level listed from highest to lowest in sequence.

1. Green Color tag. The site provides fully verified identity information about its owner and protects your personal information.

2. Blue Color tag. The site provides basic identity information and protects your personal information.

3. Yellow Color tag. The site provides self signed security certificate. Trust at your own risk.

4. Gray Color tag. The site doesn’t provide any identity information.

How to know once Website’s site identity? Simple easy. You can access the site identity for any Website by clicking the site’s icon on the left edge of the location bar.

The green color tag at eBay Website above shows it is fully verified! So, you can buy gadget safely there. ;) So far, I only found eBay as green color tagged site. Have you found others fully verified Website?
