Today, one of my SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES9) encounter network error. The problem is the server and client can’t ping each other.

After checked the Cat5 cable using network tester, it shows the cable is working fine. Since the server already run for more than a year without my attention, I should ignore on the driver and OS part. But I still double check on its driver and protocol. I ping to itself and read though the event log file. After all, I found no error on software side. Hence, I suspect it was due to hardware problem, especially network card (NIC) error.

Configure the Network Card (NIC)

To make it work with minimum configuration, I decide to replace it with the same model network card. After boot up the system, it auto detect the NIC without any error. Now, I should put back its original TCPIP settings, including its IP address, subnet mask, gateway and DNS server name.

Since SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES9) is so stable, I have not touch it for about 1 year! Sometime, I even forgot about its existence. Opps… now I forgot what is the command to configure the NIC! It was a shame to forgot this simple command as a network administrator. :p

After search from Internet, I have found the command to configure the NIC.

ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.0  			broadcast 192.168.0.254

I hope by sharing this info here, I will not forget it if same thing happen again next year. Within seconds, my SLES9 box is up and running again.

Good news for Linuxers !

Few days ago, Novell just launched it's latest open source operating system – "openSUSE 10.3". For those who has experience the power of SUSE linux, I believe the latest version would disappoint you ! With the new features and multimedia suppoty add ons, your SUSE box is able to compete or even better Vista. Why ? Because openSUSE comes with server functionality and it is Free for download (Yes, I like Free things ! )

What's inside openSUSE 10.3 ?

    * Loaded with 16GB of software
* Firefox 2.0
* OpenOffice.org 2.3
* MP3 Support
* Photo tools
* VoIP
* Easy wireless networking
* Network computing
* Application Development
* Virtualization
* Security tools

As you can see from the components list above, openSUSE linux was build towards multimedia box that armed with powerful server tools. If you haven't try out linux operating system due to multimedia issue, now you are wrong ! It's worth to give openSUSE 10.3 a try.

Why use openSUSE 10.3 ?

After i've reviewed the openSUSE features, there are few new features that really impressed me. I wish to point out these few features for you all!

Great improved boot time – A huge improvement on the booting time compare to openSUSE 10.2. Previous SUSE boot time was recorded as 55 seconds, but with the latest version you can boot your SUSE box within 27 seconds which means 50% boot time decrease in this release! See the bootchart here.

1-Click Install – Perhaps you know, openSUSE contains thousands of packages that allow you to install or upgrade from various repositories. Now with 1-Click Install, you can use the web front-end to search, browse and install application with a single click. This is what we call hassle-free installation

KDE 4 – No doubt lots of people love the Ms Vista beatiful interface like me. The latest openSUSE come with KDE 4 that include lots of new components, nice themes, and icons that could beat Vista theme!

Download you openSUSE for Free at openSUSE.org , you need a DVD writer and an empty DVD

Let us know your experience with openSUSE in comments.
