LTSP on Hard Drive

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

LTSP or Linux Terminal Server Project is one of the good method to save your Microsoft Windows OS license cost.Basically, LTSP client can boot on various way: a diskette, CDROM, Network Card (NIC) or Hard Drive. In this way, of course it save your hardware cost too!

I’ve implemented LTSP client in production workstation 2 years ago. All LTSP client boot with configuration set on SUSE Linux server (SLES 9). Less admin work, easier to maintain such huge workstation pool. Most of my LTSP client have no hard drive. They run on just NIC or a diskette for older motherboard that don’t have PXE.

LTSP Boot Device Problem

Recently I faced a problem to overcome LTSP boot device error. As you know, we seldom use acient floppy drive nowadays. Some old LTSP computer have to boot from floppy diskette and the floppy drive spoilt. How to resolve this problem once for all? It is tedious job to buy floppy drive and replace. Floppy drive and diskette is high consumable item. It can just spoilt easily without notice. (more…)

Sunday, May 18th, 2008

We are all hate about restarting computer. Because sometime it took long boot up time if it was installed with softwares.

Do you still remember in Pentium I processors time, some Pentium 75Mhz CPU took minutes to boot up just a Windows 95 machine! Huh~ sweat. Even have enough time to make a cup of coffee or tea. :)

Come to Vista age, this boot up period still a big problem. That’s the reason why many people do not switch off their computer.

Splash, The Fastest OS

ASUS has come out its new concept of Operating System (OS). This so call “Instant On Motherboard” contain Splashtop OS in its firmware.

According to Splashtop blog, it is a Linux OS that able to boot up for instant access to the Internet, Skype, media player in 5 seconds! Wow, this is too fast. Work similar like my iPod touch or other PDA.

Why it can boot so fast? Its because instead of waiting for a full boot from HDD, Splashtop boot from firmware. You can surf Net, Chat, surf, and play a game – all one click away after pushing the power button! (more…)

picotuxI know you have heard about the world’s largest LCD monitor and thinnest laptop. But have you ever heard about the smallest linux computer? The smallest linux computer must be Picotux.

Why say it is the smallest computer? Its size dimension only (35mm×19mm×19mm), slightly larger than a RJ45 connector. To easier for your imagination, I have combined the real photo side by side as below.

RJ45 compare Picotux

The Smallest Computer Spec

What picotux can run with its small size (even smaller than my thumb)? Inside, there is an ARM7 CPU at 55 MHz running uClinux kernel 2.4.27 and Busybox 1.0. So far, its only come with 8MB RAM and 4MB flash storage. You can use its serial or ethernet port (LAN) to program the system. It comes with webserver and telnet application.

If you noticed, there is power connector right beside the LAN port hole. It accept 110-220V power supply. With its POE (Power Over Ethernet) model, you don’t even need a separated power supply, Cool! :) (more…)
